Which acids are in Acid Trip?

This exfoliating toner contains a blend of three acids – glycolic acid, lactic acid (both AHAs), and gluconolactone (a PHA).

How do these acids work?

These chemical exfoliants both work in the same way – breaking down the ‘glue’ that holds dead skin cells together. This removes buildup of dead skin cells from pores and smooths away rough skin texture, resulting in skin that looks brighter and feels softer. They also stimulate skin cell turnover, which speeds up the skin’s process of shedding dead skin cells in the long-term. This is a safer method of exfoliation than using physical scrubs, which often contain harsh grains that can cause tiny tears in the skin.

In addition, both AHAs and PHAs are hydrophilic, which means they attract water molecules to the skin, so are really beneficial if you have dry or dehydrated skin.

What’s the difference between AHAs and PHAs?

The difference between the acids is their molecule size, so they function at different levels of the skin. Glycolic acid is made of tiny molecules which can penetrate deep through multiple layers of skin – it’s particularly effective for clearing pores and preventing the buildup that leads to breakouts. The molecule size of lactic acid is a little bigger, so it targets the middle layers, and gluconolactone is made of much larger molecules which work on the upper layers – so it’s more beneficial to improving skin’s surface texture and appearance and is also well-suited to sensitive skin. Some exfoliating toners only contain one type of acid, but because Acid Trip contains multiple, it provides a very thorough exfoliation that can target multiple skin concerns.

What else is in Acid Trip?

As well as the all-important acids, the new Acid Trip formulation is boosted with soothing and hydrating actives like glycerin, sugar cane extract, and allantoin. Together, these help to soften skin, draw in hydration, and strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier.
