Skye Candle Company
[purchase] I’m very glad to discover this Scottish candle company (it was a birthday present) because much as I love a gorgeous scented candle, I’m acutely aware of often not being able to square up the price with the experience. Not so here – the candle I have is punching above its weight and I’m not able to square it the other way around, i.e. you get more experience than you pay for!
The scent I have is Machair – a Gaelic origin word that describes fertile and grassy land that blooms in spring across the Scottish coastland. You’ll have guessed by the name of the company that its based on the Hebridean island of Skye so fragrance inspiration is abundant. There’s a Scottish candle collection that focuses on aromas pertinent to the landscape (Scots Pine, Highland Gorse and Scottish Bluebell for example) but also a core range that’s a bit more mainstream with fragrances such as Grapefruit & Neroli, Mango and Lemongrass and a few surprises – hello, Pimento & Cranberry! The soy candles are £20 each and the Scottish collection (also soy) is priced at £22 each for the large candles (45 hour burn time).
Back to Machair. My kitchen smells divine with notes of grassy earth, bluebell and herby gentian. It’s warm and fresh at the same time and very uplifting. There’s something about it that reminded me of being in Calvia in Majorca – that scent of the morning with newly watered grass, sea and the sun in sight just hovering below the floral notes. Absolutely lovely would sum it up perfectly. It’s really a huge recommend – this is a small brand offering remarkable quality taking inspiration from the local environment and beyond.
