MAO CHOW TEAM TO OPEN FACING HEAVEN IN HACKNEY
Julian Denis, founder of our fave vegan Chinese spot Mao Chow, is closing the doors on his Hackney restaurant at the end of February but it’s not all bad news because he’s moving just around the corner to open Facing Heaven. Besides being bigger (not exactly a hard feat as Mao Chow is notoriously tiny), Facing Heaven will be more experimental when it comes to the food, so as well as regional Chinese influences, the menu will also have Puerto Rican, American and Portuguese influences, reflecting Julian’s upbringing in LA.
Everything will still be vegan and retain those punchy flavours Julian has become known for, with dishes set to include Macau-style baked pork chop rice, spicy & numbing twice fried Jerusalem artichokes with green chilli dip, stir fried blood sausage with lacto chilli & fresh garlic, Dongpo cauliflower, whole sizzling aubergine, and malt caramel & strawberry powder ice cream, with hot pots served on Sundays. The drinks list sounds like more than a match for food with funky natty wines and Baijiu cocktails on offer – heavenly.
