A Sequel To ‘Joker’ Has Just Been Confirmed By Director Todd Phillips

If you cast your minds back to the (just about) pre-pandemic times of late 2019, you’ll remember the world of entertainment being gripped by one movie: Joker. It grossed over $1 billion at the box office worldwide, and Joaquin Phoenix took the Best Actor Oscar for his performance.

Fast-forward three years, and the successful pairing looks to be back, with director Todd Phillips posting a picture on Instagram of the actor reading the script for the new movie. And, it even has a name, with a shot reading the words “Joker: Foile à Deux”, which roughly translates to “shared madness”.

According to Deadline, Phoenix has not yet put pen to paper for his role in the movie, but the film is definitely going ahead and he is expected to reprise his role. In the original 2019 film, he played Arthur Fleck, a budding standup comic suffering from a neurological disorder, who eventually became the Joker as we know him in Gotham City.

The first film was nominated for 11 Oscars (including Best Picture), with Phoenix’s Best Actor and Hildur Guðnadóttir’s Best Original Score making up the prizes won. It also holds the accolade for highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, taking $1.07 billion.

A release date for Joker: Foile à Deux has not yet been announced.
