Sex Education season 4 is beginning filming this summer, and losing two much-loved characters

Sex Education spoilers ahead

Netflix has confirmed that Sex Education will be returning for a fourth series, and honestly? We’re so relieved. After another extraordinary season – which we’ve obviously already binged – it’s fair to say we still have some questions. Namely, how did we end up shipping Otis and Ruby over Otis and Maeve? And who exactly is the father of Jean’s baby?!

In a tweet, Netflix wrote, “Breaking News out of #TUDUM! Sex Education has been renewed for Season 4!,” with Gillian Anderson confirming the news on her Instagram, posting a cute selfie with Asa Butterfield (Otis), Patricia Allison (Ola), Mikael Persbrandt (Jakob) and Alistair Petrie (Mr Groff) with the caption, “I guess we’ll be seeing you for S4!! @sexeducation 🍆🍆🍆”.

Why do the aubergine emojis not surprise us at all?

Here’s everything we know about Sex Education season four:

What will be the plot of Sex Education season 4?

Let’s take a recap, shall we? Season three of Sex Education saw Moordale Secondary school closing due to a lack of funding; the Head Teacher we love to loathe – Hope Haddon AKA Professor Umbridge from Harry Potter – has gone AWOL; Maeve’s off to the USA, leaving Otis (and us) wondering where their relationship stands; and Eric dumped Adam, which we’re quite frankly distraught about.

Season four will likely pick up where the last season left off. In an interview with GLAMOUR, Laurie Nunn, the show’s creator, said, “I do sometimes get a bit scared when we leave on a really big cliff-hanger, and then I think, Oh no, what if we don’t get to continue this storyline? What if series three ends and Maeve goes to America and then we never see these characters again? That would be quite heartbreaking, but I think you’ve got to take the risk and try and leave people wanting more.”

Who will star in Sex Education season 4?

Although no casting decisions have been confirmed yet, it’s likely that we can expect to see our season one-to-three favourites returning. The original cast includes Asa Butterfield (Otis), Emma Mackey (Maeve), Gillian Anderson (Dr Jean Milburn), Ncuti Gatwa (Eric), Connor Swindells (Adam), Aimee Lou Wood (Aimee), Mimi Keen (Ruby), and Tanya Reynolds (Lily).

When will Sex Education season 4 be released?

Given that season three has only just been released it’s likely that we’ll be waiting a little while longer for season four. We’ve got our fingers crossed it will hit our screens in 2022.

Is there a trailer for Sex Education season 4?

Not yet. In the meantime enjoy GLAMOUR’s chat with Patricia Allison, Chinenye Ezeudu and Aimee Lou Wood.
