People are doing a full face of makeup using their mum’s makeup products
Raise your hand if you remember breaking into your mum’s makeup stash as a child and slapping whatever you could find on your face and, invariably, the walls? Well, in a massive (and to be honest needed) dose of nostalgia, TikTok‘s latest beauty trends is taking us back to yesteryear, as users are attempting to do a full face of products using only their parent’s makeup bag.
It’s basically as straight-forward as it sounds, you just grab your mum’s makeup bag and get going. Of course, it varies in difficulty depending on clued-up on beauty your ma is, so for example, if your mum was Kylie Jenner, you’d have zero problem – you’d probs look better than usual – but if you’ve got a mum who doesn’t use much on her face and hasn’t replaced her beauty products since 2010, it’s likely going to prove a little trickier.
And the latter is exactly the challenge that user @serenalakkiss come up against. In the first video (she splits the challenge across two uploads), she explains that she doesn’t know “how” she is going to do a full-face of makeup as her mum has barely any makeup. However, she does have a Clarins moisturiser (though it is down to its final dregs), a Garnier BB Cream, which Serena explains isn’t her “thing” but she attempts to spread it across her skin with her fingers: “my mum uses no sponges or brushes so this is going to be fun,” she tells the camera, as she attempts to blend in a generous amount of the product.
In part two, she adds a little No.7 Lip Care before moving on to some Body Shop Brown Lip Liner, which she decides to use on her eyes too, “because this is the only liner the bag.” She uses it to create a slight wing at the sides of her eyes and, we have to say, it’s actually a really pretty, sultry shade that instantly looks as though its an intentional autumnal smokey eye. Win. She then lines her lips and adds the Kiko Creamy Lipstick in shade 106.
“Last but not least, is the L’Oreal Million Lashes Mascara,” Serena says. “I actually really like this one.”
Though she does add: “Mum this is so dry, I’ve gotta get you a new one.”
Et voila, that’s it. The look got mixed reactions, with some questioning why there were crucial items missing from her mum’s makeup collection. “Why doesn’t she have blush??????” wrote one, another adding: “I swear all mums have a No7 product.”
Some suggested Serena buy her mum some new makeup, while others thought the low-effort look actually made for a great day-to-day face.
Next up, the transformation we’re perhaps most impressed by, @maryxm.mx. It gets off to a rocky start as Maryam shows us the makeup bag she has to work with, saying: “honestly I’m look at this and I’m like, do I really want to do this.” However, she soldiers on – and at least this time, she has actual brushes to work with – forgoing doing her brows due to lack of products and going straight in with the Born This Way concealer, blending it in across her lids. For eyeshadow, her mum has an actual Huda Beauty Eye Palette and sorry, but that is some serious maternal brownie points in our books.
She lightly “bronzes the eye up” and then goes in with moisturiser as a base and adding the elf Halo Glow Filter Foundation on top, before adding Nars Foundation on top of that. Seriously, this makeup bag is shaping up to be better than ours.
No dried out mascaras here, her mum’s Maybelline version does the trick, and the final flourish is adding a “lip plumping thing”. “I absolutely hate the lips but the base is ok,” she says of the end result, though her followers disagree: “I like the lip colour!’ writes one, another adding, ”what is the lip and shade ? xx”
We think you probably get the picture on the trend now, it’s basically an opportunity to nosey through someone else’s makeup bag, see how people use products differently and give us ideas on how to use those older beauty lotions and potions we have lying around. In short, we’re obsessed.
You can find a few more examples of the trend below. BRB, just going to our mum’s.
