Dry January season is almost here but before then it’s Christmas – heard of it? Word on the street is that it’s a good time to get your last few drinks in before going cold (or tepid) turkey in the new year. Mulled wine, Buck’s Fizz or classic eggnog might come to mind when you think of seasonal booze, but this year we wanted to look a little outside the box for a buzz. Whether you feel like going all-out with an outré festive tipple, keeping things classic with a modernised-but-familiar fave or entering a rum-fuelled beachside fantasy, here are our recommendations. Black Lines Oatnog
Black Lines have reimagined the classic Christmas treat with a vegan twist. Taking the egg (and dairy) out of eggnog, their signature Oatnog proved to be super popular last year with bottles selling out twice. African-made gin Bayab is made using the Baobab fruit as well as other ingredients sourced from across the African continent. The gin is then hand-crafted and bottled by South African distillers in KwaZulu Natal. Choose from the African Classic Dry (with notes of juniper berries, coriander, rosemary, cinnamon and coarse salt), the Burnt Orange & Marula (with notes of marula fruit, cinnamon, burnt orange peel, coriander and sea salt) or the African Rose Water (with notes of African rose petals, rose water, coriander and sea salt).
Beavertown Frozen Neck
A sellout sensation, Beavertown’s Frozen Neck is a glitzy way to get in the Christmas spirit. The hazy IPA is infused with edible glitter and has a fresh, zesty flavour with notes of grapefruit and mango. We all know the true meaning of Christmas is glitter everywhere (especially if H&M has anything to say about it), so this one’s right on the money. Just don’t be too surprised if a little more get in your drink from a nearby party dress.
Amie Wine
