CHECKING IN | EMILIANO RIO

“At the Copa, Copacabana / the hottest spot north of Havana”…..oh the irony given it rained for four nights and five days non stop during our time in Rio de Janeiro. A chef friend who’s lived there eight years said he’d never seen weather like it. Luckily, it wasn’t all bad as we had the very comfortable Emiliano hotel to hole up in. Located slap bang on Copacabana beach, the hotel has 90 rooms, half of which have beach views and cute balconies with chairs for people watching – or in our case, weather tracking.

It’s worth splashing out on a Deluxe Sea View room, not just for the view but the size too. They are pretty spacious with comfy sofas for watching the extra large TVs, huge marble clad bathrooms with roll top baths and local products, including bath salts which make for a great replacement for sea water – you can just about see the sea from the tub so apply a bit of imagination and voila.

There’s also a rooftop with infinity pool, which can be enjoyed all year round (even during the rain as we proved) and a sauna with glass windows over the beach – an adequate replacement for the sun’s heat and the added bonus of no sunburn. Take that weather man. There’s also a gym, steam room and spa.

Downstairs, the modern lobby bar is a great place to sit to enjoy a coffee or cocktail in one of the many comfy chairs whilst the adjoining restaurant is similar in style to its sister, the Emiliano São Paulo, with huge ceilings and living wall. It’s a great space to while away the morning over a long drawn out breakfast or indeed enjoy a long lunch or dinner.

The hotel’s central location makes it a great base to explore the city too, with most things well within walking distance – oh, and the umbrellas are on point too.
