A FORMER HAKKASAN CHEF HAS OPENED GOUQI IN ST JAMES’S
Chef Tong Chee Hwee has returned to London to open his own Chinese restaurant Gouqi
The capital isn’t short of high-end Chinese restaurants and now another one has been added to that list in the shape of Gouqi. Opening slightly under-the-radar in St James’s, Gouqi (it’s a name a play on the goji berry) is the debut solo restaurant from chef Tong Chee Hwee, who helped open Hakkasan Hanway Place in 2001 and win its first Michelin star (making it the first Chinese restaurant in the UK to earn one), as well as leading the kitchens at Hakkasan Mayfair, Yauatcha Soho and HKK, so he’s certainly got form.
At Gouqi, Tong is offering a contemporary take on Chinese cooking, with a la carte, tasting and dim sum menus all on offer. Fans of Hakkasan and Yauatcha will be pleased to see prawn cheung fun and baked venison puffs on the dim sum selection, with the steamed Royal Dim Sum Platter amongst the restaurant’s signature dishes. The others include legendary Peking Duck with Oscietra caviar (at £230), whole South African kippin abalone (at £125) and slow-cooked A4 wagyu with chef’s special sauce (at £115), plus crab, lobster and scallops listed at market price,
There’s a cocktail menu that’s inspired by all four corners of Asia and a wine list that starts at £40 a bottle and tops out at £650, so Gouqi is defo one to come to with your credit card (or better yet, someone else’s) ready to see some action.
